African safaris: your questions answered

Which African country is best for a safari?

There is no single best country, it depends on what you want. Kenya and Tanzania are the classic choice for big herds, the Great Migration and first safaris. Botswana is the connoisseur's pick for water-based safaris in the Okavango Delta and superb predators with very few vehicles. Rwanda is for gorilla trekking, and Zanzibar for a beach finish. Many of our trips combine two or more. Tell us what you want to see and we will steer you to the right place.

When is the best time to go on safari in Africa?

Most of Africa is excellent year-round, but the dry season (roughly June to October) is prime for game viewing almost everywhere, as wildlife concentrates around water and the bush thins out. In East Africa this overlaps with the Mara River crossings of the Great Migration. The green season is quieter, lusher and better value, with superb birding and newborn animals. We time your trip around the wildlife and experiences you most want.

How much does an African safari cost?

As a guide, a scheduled small-group safari starts from around $4,000 per person, a classic private safari runs roughly $7,000 to $15,000, and a luxury or multi-country trip with the finest camps typically runs from $15,000 upwards. Every trip is tailor-made, so we shape the destinations, camps, length and pace around your budget, and hold exclusive rates at many of the best camps across the continent.

How long do you need for an African safari?

We would suggest at least seven days to make the long-haul flights worthwhile, with eight to twelve days ideal for one or two countries plus a beach finish. A single park rewards three or four nights so the wildlife has time to deliver. Tell us how long you have and we will build the right balance of game viewing, travel and downtime.

Are African safaris safe and suitable for families?

Yes. We work only with trusted local operators and well-run camps, and safari is one of the most rewarding family trips there is, with many camps and lodges welcoming children and offering family tents, junior-ranger programmes and flexible game drives. We will match the right destinations and properties to your group, and brief you fully on health, malaria precautions and what to expect before you travel.

Can you combine more than one country or add a beach?

Absolutely, and it is one of the most popular ways to travel. Kenya and Tanzania combine naturally as one ecosystem, the Serengeti pairs beautifully with Zanzibar, and Botswana sits alongside Victoria Falls. We handle every internal flight, transfer, border crossing and the timing so a multi-country trip flows seamlessly from one highlight to the next.
