Where to go on safari in September

The same month can feel completely different across Africa. Compare the wildlife, weather and practical trade-offs in each country before choosing your route.

Kenya in September

September remains superb in the Maasai Mara, with migration herds often spread across the plains and crossings still possible. It can feel slightly calmer than August while retaining dry-season wildlife quality, though popular camps remain busy.

We would choose between the Maasai Mara, its private conservancies, Laikipia and Amboseli according to the month's rainfall, wildlife movement and the level of exclusivity you want. Camp location matters as much as the country itself, particularly when migration timing or clear Kilimanjaro views are priorities.

Tanzania in September

Northern Serengeti remains the principal migration area, while Tarangire, Ruaha and Nyerere provide excellent dry-season game viewing. Temperatures rise gradually and water becomes increasingly important to wildlife movements.

Tanzania changes enormously through the year, so we match the Serengeti region and camp style to where the migration is likely to be, then decide whether Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Nyerere or Zanzibar strengthens the route. The best itinerary follows the season rather than forcing the same circuit into every month.

Mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Uganda in September

September is a transitional month. Gorilla trekking remains very good, with greener forest conditions and variable showers. Permit demand can be more moderate than in July and August, offering a useful shoulder-season option.

Gorilla permits and the forest sector should be confirmed before the rest of the route. We also consider trail conditions, transfer times and whether chimpanzee trekking or a savannah safari in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls is worth adding, rather than treating Uganda as a single-day gorilla stop.

Southern Africa

Safari beside the waterways of the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Botswana in September

The Delta begins slowly receding, but wildlife viewing stays excellent and predator activity can be outstanding. September is warmer than the winter months without reaching October's most intense heat.

The Okavango is not one uniform destination. We pair water-focused and land-focused camps according to flood levels, then decide whether Chobe, Linyanti or the Makgadikgadi adds a genuinely different experience. In transitional months, choosing the right concession is more important than simply booking the Delta.

Lion in the open grasslands of Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe in September

September is hot, dry and highly productive for wildlife. Animals gather at dependable water sources, particularly in Hwange and Mana Pools. Walking and canoe safaris can be excellent, though midday heat is increasing.

We balance Hwange's waterhole wildlife, Mana Pools' walking and canoe safaris and the seasonal character of Victoria Falls. Heat, river levels and camp-opening dates can change the shape of the trip, so Zimbabwe works best when the route is built around what the month does particularly well.

Safaris in September: your questions answered

Is September a good month for an African safari?

September combines dry-season reliability with warming temperatures. Wildlife is concentrated around water across Botswana and Zimbabwe, the migration often remains in the Maasai Mara and northern Serengeti, and Uganda's conditions begin transitioning towards the short rains without losing year-round trekking access.

Which country is best for a safari in September?

The best choice depends on the wildlife and conditions you value most. Compare the five country guides above, then use our planning advice to balance weather, seasonality, crowds and route logistics.

How far ahead should I book a September safari?

Book earlier for peak wildlife periods, festive dates and limited gorilla permits. Shoulder and green-season trips can be more flexible, but the best small camps and family rooms still reward early planning.
