Where to go on safari in June

The same month can feel completely different across Africa. Compare the wildlife, weather and practical trade-offs in each country before choosing your route.

East Africa

Migration country, classic savannahs and the mountain forests of Uganda.

Kenya in June

June marks the start of Kenya's long dry season. Vegetation begins thinning, wildlife becomes easier to find and visitor numbers are usually lower than in July and August. The major migration herds are generally still south of the Maasai Mara early in the month.

We would choose between the Maasai Mara, its private conservancies, Laikipia and Amboseli according to the month's rainfall, wildlife movement and the level of exclusivity you want. Camp location matters as much as the country itself, particularly when migration timing or clear Kilimanjaro views are priorities.

Tanzania in June

The migration moves through the western and central Serengeti towards the north. River crossings are never guaranteed, but herd movement and rutting activity can be dramatic. Tarangire and the southern parks begin entering their stronger dry-season period.

Tanzania changes enormously through the year, so we match the Serengeti region and camp style to where the migration is likely to be, then decide whether Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Nyerere or Zanzibar strengthens the route. The best itinerary follows the season rather than forcing the same circuit into every month.

Mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Uganda in June

June is one of the drier and more popular gorilla-trekking months. Trails are often more manageable, though rain is always possible in Bwindi. Permits and the best lodges should be booked early, especially for trips combining Uganda with Kenya or Tanzania.

Gorilla permits and the forest sector should be confirmed before the rest of the route. We also consider trail conditions, transfer times and whether chimpanzee trekking or a savannah safari in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls is worth adding, rather than treating Uganda as a single-day gorilla stop.

Southern Africa

The Okavango's seasonal water and dry-season wildlife around Zimbabwe's rivers and waterholes.

Safari beside the waterways of the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Botswana in June

June brings cool mornings, dry weather and increasingly extensive Okavango floodwaters. Water activities become more widely available while wildlife concentrates around permanent channels. Nights can be genuinely cold, so warm layers are essential.

The Okavango is not one uniform destination. We pair water-focused and land-focused camps according to flood levels, then decide whether Chobe, Linyanti or the Makgadikgadi adds a genuinely different experience. In transitional months, choosing the right concession is more important than simply booking the Delta.

Zimbabwe in June

June is a prime dry-season month, with cool temperatures and improving game viewing in Hwange, Mana Pools and other reserves. Victoria Falls still carries substantial water, creating an excellent combined safari-and-falls itinerary.

We balance Hwange's waterhole wildlife, Mana Pools' walking and canoe safaris and the seasonal character of Victoria Falls. Heat, river levels and camp-opening dates can change the shape of the trip, so Zimbabwe works best when the route is built around what the month does particularly well.

How to plan a June safari

June offers an excellent balance of wildlife, weather and slightly lower pressure than July or August. Pack warm layers for dawn drives in Botswana, Zimbabwe and higher East African areas.

Safaris in June: your questions answered

Is June a good month for an African safari?

June is one of the year's best transition months. East Africa emerges green from the rains, the Serengeti migration pushes north, and the main dry season begins. The Okavango flood expands through Botswana while Zimbabwe's water-dependent wildlife viewing improves in cool, clear conditions.

Which country is best for a safari in June?

The best choice depends on the wildlife and conditions you value most. Compare the five country guides above, then use our planning advice to balance weather, seasonality, crowds and route logistics.

How far ahead should I book a June safari?

Book earlier for peak wildlife periods, festive dates and limited gorilla permits. Shoulder and green-season trips can be more flexible, but the best small camps and family rooms still reward early planning.
