Planning a family safari that everyone enjoys

A family safari can be the trip your children talk about for the rest of their lives. The secret is getting the pace, camps and activities right for the ages and personalities in your group.

Where should you go with children?

Kenya and Tanzania are brilliant for first family safaris because the wildlife is varied and there are plenty of camps used to welcoming children. Botswana offers wonderfully different activities, including river safaris and mokoro trips, but camp age policies and distances need careful planning.

There is no single perfect age for safari. Younger children often do best with shorter drives, a pool and plenty of flexibility. Teenagers may enjoy a more adventurous route with walking, cultural experiences or time in different landscapes.

Private vehicles and family-friendly camps

A private vehicle can be one of the best investments on a family safari. You can leave later, return when attention starts to fade and spend longer with the animals everyone is excited about. It also removes the pressure of matching another group’s pace.

We look closely at the practical details: whether the family room is genuinely connected, how meals work, whether the camp is fenced and what children can do between drives. A long list of activities means very little if most have a higher age limit.

Combining safari and beach

A few days on Zanzibar or the Kenyan coast can be a wonderful end to a family safari. It gives everyone time to swim, relax and process the adventure before flying home.

We prefer to keep the safari itself well paced rather than relying on the beach to recover from an exhausting itinerary. Five to seven nights on safari followed by several nights on the coast works well for many families, but the final balance depends on your children and school-holiday dates.

Family Safaris: your questions answered

What age is best for a family safari?

There is no universal minimum because camp policies and activities vary. Tell us the children’s ages and we will recommend destinations, camps and a daily rhythm that are appropriate for your family.

Are family safaris safe?

We work with trusted local operators and well-run camps. Families receive practical guidance before travel, and we match activities and accommodation to the ages in the group.

Can we book family rooms or connecting accommodation?

Many camps offer family tents, suites or nearby rooms, but the exact setup varies. We confirm sleeping arrangements before recommending a property.

Will game drives be too long for children?

They do not have to be. A private vehicle and carefully chosen camps can create more flexibility around departure times, breaks and the length of each drive.

Can we add beach time to a family safari?

Yes. Zanzibar or the Kenyan coast can add a slower finish after the safari, with time to swim, relax and reset before the journey home.

Plan for every member of the family

Share the children’s ages, school-holiday dates and what everyone enjoys. We will recommend a route that works for the whole group.
