Why Uganda

A safari that changes character every few days

Uganda is one of the few places where a single journey can move naturally from mountain-gorilla and chimpanzee forests to open savannah, the Nile and wildlife-rich wetlands. The country is compact enough to combine these experiences without the trip becoming a race between airports.

Most first journeys concentrate on the southwest, linking Bwindi, Kibale and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Longer routes can continue north to Murchison Falls or reach the remote plains of Kidepo. The result is a safari with real contrast: walking in rainforest, tracking primates, watching big game and exploring by boat.

What makes the route

Uganda beyond the gorillas

The gorillas may start the conversation, but the strongest itineraries give Uganda's other landscapes and wildlife equal room. These are the experiences that turn a trek into a complete safari.

Bwindi and Kibale

Bwindi's mountain gorillas and Kibale's chimpanzees offer two very different forest encounters. Combining them reveals the contrast between slow, ground-level gorilla trekking and the energy of chimpanzee communities moving through the canopy.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth is the natural savannah partner to a southwest primate route. Game drives focus on elephant, buffalo and big cats, while the Kazinga Channel brings hippos, birdlife and animals gathering along the water's edge.

A boat safari on the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls and the Nile

At Murchison Falls, the Nile is part of the safari rather than a backdrop. Boat trips approach the falls through river habitat rich in hippos, crocodiles and birdlife, while the surrounding grasslands add elephant, giraffe, buffalo and lion.

Lakes, mountains and remote north

Lakes Mutanda and Bunyonyi create breathing room after the forests. Travellers with more time can add the Rwenzori foothills or Kidepo Valley, where dry savannah and mountain horizons feel far removed from the classic southwest circuit.

Best time for a Uganda safari

Uganda can be visited throughout the year. The drier periods generally make gorilla and chimpanzee forest trails easier underfoot, while the wetter months bring lush landscapes, excellent birding and fewer travellers. Permit availability and the wider route matter as much as rainfall.
