Where to go on safari in April

The same month can feel completely different across Africa. Compare the wildlife, weather and practical trade-offs in each country before choosing your route.

East Africa

Migration country, classic savannahs and the mountain forests of Uganda.

Kenya in April

April is typically one of Kenya's wettest months. Some camps in high-rainfall areas close and unsealed roads can become difficult. Travellers who choose April should focus on established properties, flexible schedules and the appeal of low crowds rather than trying to cover a long route.

We would choose between the Maasai Mara, its private conservancies, Laikipia and Amboseli according to the month's rainfall, wildlife movement and the level of exclusivity you want. Camp location matters as much as the country itself, particularly when migration timing or clear Kilimanjaro views are priorities.

Tanzania in April

The northern circuit can still be visited, but heavy rain is common and some camps close. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro retain wildlife throughout the year, while southern and western parks are generally less practical. Lower rates can be attractive for travellers comfortable with weather disruption.

Tanzania changes enormously through the year, so we match the Serengeti region and camp style to where the migration is likely to be, then decide whether Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Nyerere or Zanzibar strengthens the route. The best itinerary follows the season rather than forcing the same circuit into every month.

Uganda in April

April brings frequent rain and muddy forest trails. Gorilla trekking still operates and photography can be atmospheric, but the physical conditions are more demanding. Permit availability can be better than in peak season, making it an option for flexible, well-prepared travellers.

Gorilla permits and the forest sector should be confirmed before the rest of the route. We also consider trail conditions, transfer times and whether chimpanzee trekking or a savannah safari in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls is worth adding, rather than treating Uganda as a single-day gorilla stop.

Southern Africa

Safari beside the waterways of the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Botswana in April

The rains begin easing and temperatures become more comfortable. The landscape remains green and birding stays strong. The main Okavango flood has not yet reached its seasonal peak, so choose camps for mixed land-and-water potential rather than assuming every channel is navigable.

The Okavango is not one uniform destination. We pair water-focused and land-focused camps according to flood levels, then decide whether Chobe, Linyanti or the Makgadikgadi adds a genuinely different experience. In transitional months, choosing the right concession is more important than simply booking the Delta.

Zimbabwe in April

April is a transition into the dry season. Victoria Falls can be extremely powerful as wet-season water reaches the gorge, while spray may obscure some viewpoints. Safari areas begin drying, though peak wildlife concentrations are still ahead.

We balance Hwange's waterhole wildlife, Mana Pools' walking and canoe safaris and the seasonal character of Victoria Falls. Heat, river levels and camp-opening dates can change the shape of the trip, so Zimbabwe works best when the route is built around what the month does particularly well.

How to plan a April safari

Use fewer bases, choose reliable access and expect itinerary adjustments. April works best when value, photography or Victoria Falls matters more than completely predictable game-drive conditions.

Safaris in April: your questions answered

Is April a good month for an African safari?

April is a specialist safari month rather than the easiest first-time window. The long rains are established in much of East Africa, some camps close and road travel can slow. In return, prices and visitor numbers are low, landscapes are intensely green and Victoria Falls is often approaching a powerful high-water display.

Which country is best for a safari in April?

The best choice depends on the wildlife and conditions you value most. Compare the five country guides above, then use our planning advice to balance weather, seasonality, crowds and route logistics.

How far ahead should I book a April safari?

Book earlier for peak wildlife periods, festive dates and limited gorilla permits. Shoulder and green-season trips can be more flexible, but the best small camps and family rooms still reward early planning.
