Things to do

Walk, drive and explore the Zambezi

Zambia's best routes leave time for the differences between its parks. A day on foot in the Luangwa Valley feels nothing like a boat trip on the Zambezi.

South Luangwa

South Luangwa is a place to slow down and walk. With an experienced guide, you notice tracks, bird calls and the smaller details between game drives. Seasonal bush camps offer time to explore beyond the busier park entrances.

Give each wilderness area time

I would rather give you several days in two well-chosen areas than rush you through four. South Luangwa is wonderful on foot; the Lower Zambezi brings the river into the day. We can decide where Victoria Falls fits once we know your dates.

Zambia safaris: your questions answered

When is the best time for a Zambia safari?

May to October is the main dry-season safari window. As water becomes scarce, wildlife is easier to find in South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi. The river valleys can get very hot in September and October, so tell us whether you would rather prioritise milder weather or the strongest dry-season viewing.

How much does a Zambia safari cost?

Our Zambia itineraries for 2027 start at $11,390 per person in USD. The price depends on the camps, season, route and flights you choose. We will prepare a tailored quote for your dates and explain what is included.

Which Zambia safari areas should I combine?

South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi make a strong pairing if you want walking and river activities. Livingstone and Victoria Falls can sit at either end. For a shorter trip, choose one main wildlife area and give it enough time.

Can I combine Zambia and Malawi?

Yes. One of the current sample routes pairs Zambia's safari areas with time at Lake Malawi. We can adjust the mix of wildlife, travel time and lakeside rest around your dates.

Are these Zambia itineraries fixed?

No. These are starting points. We tailor the camps, nights and connections to your dates, interests and budget, subject to availability.

How many days do I need for a Zambia safari?

For South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi together, we suggest allowing around seven to ten nights on safari. That gives you time for different activities without moving camp every day. Allow extra nights if you would like to include Victoria Falls. If you have less time, staying in one wildlife area can be more rewarding than trying to fit in both.

What animals can I see on a Zambia safari?

South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi are home to elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo and hippos, although sightings are never guaranteed. South Luangwa also has giraffes, while the Lower Zambezi offers a different perspective on wildlife from the river. Rhinos are not found in South Luangwa, so a visit there should not be planned around seeing all of the Big Five.

Should I choose South Luangwa or the Lower Zambezi?

Choose South Luangwa if walking safaris and time exploring the bush on foot are high on your list. The Lower Zambezi suits travellers who want to mix game drives with boat trips or guided canoeing, subject to conditions and the camp's activities. If you have enough time, combining them gives you two different ways to experience Zambia's wildlife.

What is a walking safari in Zambia, and how fit do I need to be?

A walking safari is a guided walk through wildlife habitat, with time to notice tracks, plants and animal behaviour that you might miss from a vehicle. Short camp walks and multi-day walking trips ask different things of you. Tell us how comfortable you are walking on uneven ground and in the heat, so we can choose a suitable camp and pace. Always follow your guide's instructions.

How do I choose safari lodges and camps in Zambia?

Start with where you want to explore and the activities you enjoy, then consider the accommodation. A small South Luangwa bush camp can suit time on foot, while a riverside Lower Zambezi camp can make boat outings a bigger part of your stay. Opening dates, guiding and travel between camps matter as much as room facilities. We will help you compare the options for your dates.

Is a Zambia safari suitable for families with children?

A Zambia safari can work well for families when the camps and activities match the children's ages. Minimum ages vary between properties, and walking or canoeing may have stricter limits than game drives. Share your children's ages before we plan the trip, so we can check those restrictions and leave enough time for rest between outings.

How do I travel between Zambia's safari parks?

Domestic flights and light aircraft can connect the main safari areas, with road transfers between airports, airstrips and camps. Mfuwe is a gateway for South Luangwa, while Livingstone is useful for Victoria Falls. The right connections depend on your dates and where you stay. We plan the journey as a whole rather than assuming every park can be reached on a direct flight.

What should I pack for a Zambia safari?

Pack lightweight clothing in muted colours, comfortable closed shoes for walks, a sun hat and a warm layer for early starts. Binoculars are useful even if you are not a keen birdwatcher. If your itinerary includes light-aircraft flights, check the baggage weight and bag-size rules before packing; allowances vary. Ask a travel-health clinician about medicines and insect protection for your itinerary.

Best time for a Zambia safari

May to October is the main dry-season safari window. Late dry-season game viewing can be rewarding, but the Luangwa and Zambezi valleys are hotter then. Victoria Falls flow follows a different cycle.
