Where to go on safari in November

The same month can feel completely different across Africa. Compare the wildlife, weather and practical trade-offs in each country before choosing your route.

East Africa

Migration country, classic savannahs and the mountain forests of Uganda.

Kenya in November

The short rains usually arrive in November, often as afternoon showers rather than continuous rain. The Maasai Mara becomes green, migratory birds return and visitor numbers drop. Wildlife remains plentiful, though migration herds are generally moving south into Tanzania.

We would choose between the Maasai Mara, its private conservancies, Laikipia and Amboseli according to the month's rainfall, wildlife movement and the level of exclusivity you want. Camp location matters as much as the country itself, particularly when migration timing or clear Kilimanjaro views are priorities.

Tanzania in November

Short rains refresh the Serengeti as the migration moves towards the eastern and southern plains. The month can offer strong value, green landscapes and fewer vehicles. Rainfall varies, so flexibility is important.

Tanzania changes enormously through the year, so we match the Serengeti region and camp style to where the migration is likely to be, then decide whether Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Nyerere or Zanzibar strengthens the route. The best itinerary follows the season rather than forcing the same circuit into every month.

Uganda in November

November is wetter, with muddy forest trails and frequent showers. Gorilla trekking remains possible and photography can be atmospheric. Permit availability is often better, suiting flexible travellers prepared for rainforest conditions.

Gorilla permits and the forest sector should be confirmed before the rest of the route. We also consider trail conditions, transfer times and whether chimpanzee trekking or a savannah safari in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls is worth adding, rather than treating Uganda as a single-day gorilla stop.

Southern Africa

Safari beside the waterways of the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Botswana in November

The first substantial rains transform the landscape. Temperatures remain high, but birding surges and newborn animals begin appearing. Rates can fall from peak season, while dramatic storms create excellent photographic light.

The Okavango is not one uniform destination. We pair water-focused and land-focused camps according to flood levels, then decide whether Chobe, Linyanti or the Makgadikgadi adds a genuinely different experience. In transitional months, choosing the right concession is more important than simply booking the Delta.

Zimbabwe in November

November is unpredictable: late rains can prolong October's heat, while early storms quickly green the bush. Birding becomes a major attraction and camps are quieter. Wildlife disperses as temporary water returns.

We balance Hwange's waterhole wildlife, Mana Pools' walking and canoe safaris and the seasonal character of Victoria Falls. Heat, river levels and camp-opening dates can change the shape of the trip, so Zimbabwe works best when the route is built around what the month does particularly well.

How to plan a November safari

November is ideal for experienced travellers who value atmosphere, birds and fewer vehicles. Use flexible flight connections and avoid building the whole trip around one weather-dependent wildlife event.

Safaris in November: your questions answered

Is November a good month for an African safari?

November marks renewal across the safari regions. Short rains green Kenya and Tanzania, migratory birds arrive and visitor numbers fall. Botswana and Zimbabwe receive their first summer storms after the intense dry season. Conditions are variable, but value, colour and lower crowds can be excellent.

Which country is best for a safari in November?

The best choice depends on the wildlife and conditions you value most. Compare the five country guides above, then use our planning advice to balance weather, seasonality, crowds and route logistics.

How far ahead should I book a November safari?

Book earlier for peak wildlife periods, festive dates and limited gorilla permits. Shoulder and green-season trips can be more flexible, but the best small camps and family rooms still reward early planning.
