Where to go on safari in January

The same month can feel completely different across Africa. Compare the wildlife, weather and practical trade-offs in each country before choosing your route.

Kenya in January

January often brings warm, relatively dry weather to Kenya. Wildlife viewing remains strong in the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and other major reserves, while clear mornings can improve views of Kilimanjaro. It is popular, so the best family rooms and smaller camps should be reserved early.

We would choose between the Maasai Mara, its private conservancies, Laikipia and Amboseli according to the month's rainfall, wildlife movement and the level of exclusivity you want. Camp location matters as much as the country itself, particularly when migration timing or clear Kilimanjaro views are priorities.

Safari camp overlooking the Serengeti plains in Tanzania

Tanzania in January

The herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu. Calving begins building through the month, bringing predators into the same area. Northern Tanzania is a compelling January choice, while the southern and western parks are less predictable in the rains.

Tanzania changes enormously through the year, so we match the Serengeti region and camp style to where the migration is likely to be, then decide whether Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Nyerere or Zanzibar strengthens the route. The best itinerary follows the season rather than forcing the same circuit into every month.

Mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Uganda in January

January is usually one of Uganda's drier windows. Gorilla trekking is still a rainforest experience and showers are always possible, but trails can be easier than during the long rains. Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls also combine well with a forest-focused itinerary.

Gorilla permits and the forest sector should be confirmed before the rest of the route. We also consider trail conditions, transfer times and whether chimpanzee trekking or a savannah safari in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls is worth adding, rather than treating Uganda as a single-day gorilla stop.

Southern Africa

Safari beside the waterways of the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Botswana in January

Botswana is in its green season, with summer rain, lush vegetation and excellent birding. Wildlife is more dispersed than in the dry season, but the landscapes are vivid and prices can be lower. The Makgadikgadi region can be especially interesting as zebra move into the pans.

The Okavango is not one uniform destination. We pair water-focused and land-focused camps according to flood levels, then decide whether Chobe, Linyanti or the Makgadikgadi adds a genuinely different experience. In transitional months, choosing the right concession is more important than simply booking the Delta.

Lion in the open grasslands of Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe in January

January is warm and wet, with green landscapes, newborn animals and strong birding. This is not the easiest month for a first Hwange safari because wildlife is dispersed, but experienced travellers may value the quieter camps and photographic atmosphere.

We balance Hwange's waterhole wildlife, Mana Pools' walking and canoe safaris and the seasonal character of Victoria Falls. Heat, river levels and camp-opening dates can change the shape of the trip, so Zimbabwe works best when the route is built around what the month does particularly well.

How to plan a January safari

Choose Tanzania if calving-season wildlife is the priority, or Uganda if gorilla trekking leads the trip. For Southern Africa, treat January as a specialist green-season journey and build flexibility into light-aircraft and road connections.

Safaris in January: your questions answered

Is January a good month for an African safari?

January is one of the strongest early-year safari months. The southern Serengeti begins filling with wildebeest ahead of the main calving period, Kenya often has a warm dry spell, and Uganda's relatively drier conditions can make forest trekking more comfortable. Botswana and Zimbabwe are green, warm and quieter, rewarding travellers who value birding, dramatic skies and lower visitor numbers.

Which country is best for a safari in January?

The best choice depends on the wildlife and conditions you value most. Compare the five country guides above, then use our planning advice to balance weather, seasonality, crowds and route logistics.

How far ahead should I book a January safari?

Book earlier for peak wildlife periods, festive dates and limited gorilla permits. Shoulder and green-season trips can be more flexible, but the best small camps and family rooms still reward early planning.
