Safaris in February

February is often warm, dry and excellent for general game viewing. Amboseli, the Maasai Mara and Laikipia can all work well, with relatively open vegetation and reliable wildlife. It is a useful alternative for travellers who cannot visit during the main June-to-October dry season.

We would choose between the Maasai Mara, its private conservancies, Laikipia and Amboseli according to the month's rainfall, wildlife movement and the level of exclusivity you want. Camp location matters as much as the country itself, particularly when migration timing or clear Kilimanjaro views are priorities.

February is commonly one of the drier months for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. Forest trails may still be muddy and rain remains possible, but conditions are often favourable. It combines naturally with Tanzania for travellers wanting gorillas and the Serengeti calving season.

Gorilla permits and the forest sector should be confirmed before the rest of the route. We also consider trail conditions, transfer times and whether chimpanzee trekking or a savannah safari in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls is worth adding, rather than treating Uganda as a single-day gorilla stop.

Summer rains continue across Botswana. The green season brings migratory birds, newborn antelope and dramatic thunderstorms, while predator sightings can still be rewarding. It is a quieter, better-value time, though water-based activities depend on local channel levels rather than the later Okavango flood.

The Okavango is not one uniform destination. We pair water-focused and land-focused camps according to flood levels, then decide whether Chobe, Linyanti or the Makgadikgadi adds a genuinely different experience. In transitional months, choosing the right concession is more important than simply booking the Delta.
