Choose the area before the camp

The reserve and surrounding conservancies offer different ways to explore the Mara. Start with the game drives and activities you want, then choose a camp with the right access for your dates. Wildlife sightings and crossings are never guaranteed.

Under canvas or under a roof?

The name alone does not tell you how a place feels. A camp can be simple and close to the bush or every bit as comfortable as a lodge.

Tented camps

Fixed safari camps with canvas accommodation. The experience ranges from pared-back to very comfortable.

Luxury tented camps

More space and amenities under canvas. Choose the location and guiding as carefully as the suite.

Safari lodges

Permanent buildings, usually with a more structured set of facilities. Useful if a pool or hotel-style base matters to you.

Mobile camps

Seasonal sites that move to follow wildlife patterns. Ask where the camp will actually be for your dates.

Maasai Mara lodge questions

Should I stay in the national reserve or a conservancy?

The reserve puts you near the classic Mara and Talek River crossing areas, while private conservancies tend to have fewer vehicles and allow activities such as guided walks and night drives. You can stay in both on one trip. The best choice depends on your dates, interests and how long you have.

Which camp is best for the Great Migration?

The herds' movements change with the rains and no camp can promise a crossing. River crossings usually draw visitors between around July and October. A camp in or with access to the national reserve can help you spend time near the river, while a conservancy stay can give you a quieter base between reserve visits.

Can I combine two Maasai Mara camps?

Yes. A few nights in the national reserve and a few in a private conservancy can give you different guiding and a different pace. We will check transfers, access rules and the time available before recommending a pair.
