Where to trek

Bwindi is the main choice, but not the only one

Uganda's mountain-gorilla treks take place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi offers four trekking sectors, more lodge choice and the greatest flexibility for fly-in and overland itineraries.

Mgahinga is smaller and more secluded, close to the Rwanda border and the Virunga volcanoes. It can fit particularly well into a route linking southern Bwindi, Lake Mutanda or Rwanda. The right park is the one that works with the available permit, your lodge preference and the journey around it.

What the trekking day really involves

Gorilla trekking is highly organised, but it is not a staged encounter. The animals move, the weather changes and the forest decides how the day unfolds.

The walk can be short or demanding

After a briefing, specialist guides and trackers lead the group towards its allocated gorilla family. Contact may come relatively quickly or after several hours across steep, wet terrain. Prepare for the harder version and treat an easier walk as a bonus.

The right base changes the experience

Your permit is tied to a park and sector. Staying close to the correct briefing point avoids an unnecessarily early transfer and creates a calmer start. In Bwindi, that means matching Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo with the lodge.

Build recovery time around the trek

A second night after the trek lets you absorb the experience instead of immediately starting a long transfer. From the southwest, the journey can continue to Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, Lake Mutanda or back to Entebbe by light aircraft.

Talk to someone who's actually been there

A gorilla permit is only one part of the plan. The park, trekking sector, lodge, transport and the days either side all need to work together. Speak to someone who can explain the route honestly and shape it around your fitness, timing and wider safari priorities.
