Where to go on safari in July

The same month can feel completely different across Africa. Compare the wildlife, weather and practical trade-offs in each country before choosing your route.

Kenya in July

Dry conditions make July excellent for wildlife throughout Kenya. The migration may begin reaching the Maasai Mara, but herd timing follows rainfall and crossings cannot be scheduled precisely. Peak-season demand means higher rates and busy flagship reserves.

We would choose between the Maasai Mara, its private conservancies, Laikipia and Amboseli according to the month's rainfall, wildlife movement and the level of exclusivity you want. Camp location matters as much as the country itself, particularly when migration timing or clear Kilimanjaro views are priorities.

Tanzania in July

Northern Serengeti camps are positioned for the migration as herds move towards the Mara River. Crossings may occur, but patience and camp location matter. The wider northern circuit, Tarangire and southern parks all benefit from dry-season conditions.

Tanzania changes enormously through the year, so we match the Serengeti region and camp style to where the migration is likely to be, then decide whether Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Nyerere or Zanzibar strengthens the route. The best itinerary follows the season rather than forcing the same circuit into every month.

Mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Uganda in July

July is a high-demand gorilla-trekking month. Drier trails generally help, but forest weather remains changeable. Combine Bwindi with Kenya or Tanzania only if the itinerary allows enough time for regional flights and transfers.

Gorilla permits and the forest sector should be confirmed before the rest of the route. We also consider trail conditions, transfer times and whether chimpanzee trekking or a savannah safari in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls is worth adding, rather than treating Uganda as a single-day gorilla stop.

Southern Africa

Safari beside the waterways of the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Botswana in July

The Okavango flood is often near its greatest extent in July. Mokoro, boating and land-based activities can all combine, while dry surrounding areas push wildlife towards water. This is peak season and the best camps need long lead times.

The Okavango is not one uniform destination. We pair water-focused and land-focused camps according to flood levels, then decide whether Chobe, Linyanti or the Makgadikgadi adds a genuinely different experience. In transitional months, choosing the right concession is more important than simply booking the Delta.

Zimbabwe in July

Cool, dry weather and concentrated wildlife make July one of Zimbabwe's best safari months. Hwange's waterholes become increasingly productive, while Mana Pools enters its prime season. Mornings and evenings can be cold.

We balance Hwange's waterhole wildlife, Mana Pools' walking and canoe safaris and the seasonal character of Victoria Falls. Heat, river levels and camp-opening dates can change the shape of the trip, so Zimbabwe works best when the route is built around what the month does particularly well.

How to plan a July safari

Reserve July trips nine to twelve months ahead where possible. Avoid overpromising river crossings and choose camps for location, guiding and the broader wildlife experience.

Safaris in July: your questions answered

Is July a good month for an African safari?

July is peak safari season across much of East and Southern Africa. Dry weather improves visibility, wildlife gathers around water and the northern Serengeti becomes a major focus as the migration approaches the Mara River. Botswana's Delta is flooded and Uganda's forest trails are in one of their drier periods.

Which country is best for a safari in July?

The best choice depends on the wildlife and conditions you value most. Compare the five country guides above, then use our planning advice to balance weather, seasonality, crowds and route logistics.

How far ahead should I book a July safari?

Book earlier for peak wildlife periods, festive dates and limited gorilla permits. Shoulder and green-season trips can be more flexible, but the best small camps and family rooms still reward early planning.
