A family of mountain gorillas in Rwanda

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Volcanoes National Park protects Rwanda's mountain gorillas. After a ranger briefing, you trek through montane and bamboo forest to a habituated gorilla family, then spend one closely managed hour observing them. Permits are limited, so this is the experience we plan first.

Rwanda safaris: your questions answered

How much does a Rwanda safari cost?

Our new Rwanda itineraries start from $5,325 per person for a five-day gorilla and golden-monkey journey. A nine-day circuit starts from $7,990, while the luxury eight-day wildlife circuit starts from $17,650. Prices are based on two sharing for June to September 2027 and remain subject to permit and lodge availability.

Which places should I combine in Rwanda?

For a short trip, focus on Kigali and Volcanoes National Park. With six days, add Nyungwe for chimpanzees and the canopy walk. Eight or nine days lets you include Akagera's savannah wildlife, and Lake Kivu fits naturally between Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe.

When should I book gorilla permits?

As early as possible, especially for the drier and more popular travel periods. The trekking date anchors the whole route, so we confirm permit availability before finalising the lodges and road sequence.

Is Rwanda only for gorilla trekking?

No. Gorillas are the headline experience, but Rwanda also offers golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzees and a canopy walk in Nyungwe, classic game drives and boat safaris in Akagera, and time beside Lake Kivu.

Can you tailor these Rwanda itineraries?

Yes. Each itinerary is a starting point. We can change the accommodation level, add or remove nights, include Lake Kivu, focus on primates or build a wider East Africa combination around your dates and budget.

Best time for a Rwanda safari

Rwanda can be visited throughout the year. The two drier periods generally make forest paths easier and bring strong Akagera game viewing, while the wetter months create intensely green landscapes and can offer better value.
