Four landscapes, four very different flights

The strongest choice is the one that fits naturally with your camps, season and wider safari route.

Match the flight to the right season

The best date is often the first suitable morning in an area, leaving another morning available if wind or weather cancels the flight.

DestinationTypical availabilityPlanning note
Maasai MaraRoutinely operatedMigration months are popular, but resident wildlife and open landscapes make the flight worthwhile beyond the river crossings.
Central SerengetiYear-roundSeasonal launch areas elsewhere in the ecosystem should match the position of your camp and the wider safari route.
Okavango Delta1 April to 15 OctoberStay inside the remote flying area; an outside charter cannot reach the launch before sunrise.
Victoria Falls regionLimited, date-dependentConfirm the current operator, launch area and restrictions before treating the flight as fixed.

The morning, from camp to landing

A balloon flight is an early start, but it normally fits cleanly into the rest of the safari day.

  1. 01

    Pre-dawn collection

Your camp or lodge arranges an early transfer to the launch site.

  2. 02

    Briefing and inflation

The pilot explains the take-off and landing position while the balloon is prepared.

  3. 03

    Sunrise flight

Most flights last around an hour, but wind and landing conditions determine the exact route and duration.

  4. 04

    Landing and breakfast

The ground crew meets the balloon. Many operators include a toast or bush breakfast before returning you to your guide.

  5. 05

    Continue on safari

The flight normally finishes early enough for the rest of the day's game drive or onward journey.

Hot air balloon safaris: your questions answered

How long is a hot air balloon safari?

The flight itself is usually about 45 to 60 minutes. Allow most of the morning for the early transfer, briefing, inflation, landing and breakfast.

Can the pilot steer towards wildlife?

No. A balloon travels with the wind. The pilot controls height and selects a safe landing area, but the route and wildlife below change each morning.

What happens if the weather is unsuitable?

The operator may cancel for safety. Depending on availability, the flight can move to another morning or the operator's cancellation terms will apply. We normally recommend the first suitable morning to preserve a fallback.

Is the Okavango flight available all year?

No. Botswana Tourism Organisation currently lists the operating window as 1 April to 15 October.

Can I balloon over Victoria Falls?

Balloon availability in the Victoria Falls region is limited and date-dependent. We confirm the current launch location, operator and restrictions before adding it to an itinerary. Helicopter and microlight flights are more routinely advertised over the Falls themselves.

Is ballooning suitable for children?

Restrictions vary by operator and may include minimum age or height requirements. Share the children's ages when enquiring so the team can check the right flight.
