Kenya & Tanzania safaris: your questions answered

Can you combine Kenya and Tanzania on one safari?

Yes, and it's one of the most rewarding ways to see East Africa. The Maasai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania are part of the same ecosystem, so combining them is natural and well-trodden. A typical trip pairs a few nights in the Mara with the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, often finishing on Zanzibar. We handle the border crossing, flights and timing so it feels seamless.

How long do you need for a Kenya and Tanzania safari?

We'd suggest at least 10 days to do both countries justice, and 12 to 14 days is ideal if you want to add the Ngorongoro Crater and a few nights on Zanzibar. Our combined itineraries on this page run from around 11 to 14 days. Tell us how long you have and we'll build the right balance of Kenya, Tanzania and beach.

How do you travel between Kenya and Tanzania?

Most combined trips connect by light aircraft, with a short flight linking the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti via a border post, or via Nairobi and Kilimanjaro. It's quick and scenic, and the formalities are straightforward. We arrange every internal flight, transfer and the border crossing for you, so you simply enjoy the safari.

Should you visit Kenya or Tanzania first?

Either works, and the best order depends on your dates and the migration. Many trips start in Kenya's Maasai Mara and move south into the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, finishing on Zanzibar, which flows neatly from city arrival to beach. We'll sequence it around where the herds are likely to be for your travel dates.

When is the best time for a combined Kenya and Tanzania safari?

Both countries are excellent year-round. The long dry season, roughly June to October, is prime for game viewing across both and overlaps with the Mara River crossings (around July to October). January to February brings the calving on the Serengeti's southern plains. The green months are quieter, lusher and better value. We time your trip around the wildlife you most want to see.

How much does a Kenya and Tanzania safari cost?

As a guide, a scheduled Kenya–Tanzania group tour starts from around $9,295 per person, a classic private combined safari runs roughly $10,000 to $14,000, and a luxury trip with the finest camps and Zanzibar typically starts around $15,000 and rises from there. Every trip is tailor-made, so we shape the camps, length and pace around your budget, and hold exclusive rates at many of the best camps.

Can we add Zanzibar to a Kenya and Tanzania safari?

Absolutely, and it's a classic finish. A short flight from the Serengeti or Arusha drops you on Zanzibar, where you can unwind on white-sand beaches, dive the reefs and explore Stone Town. We pair the right beach retreat to your trip and handle all the routing and timing.

What each country brings to the trip

Male lion in the Maasai Mara, Kenya

Choose Kenya if…

The Maasai Mara delivers the densest big-cat action in East Africa, and Kenya's private conservancies let you enjoy it away from the crowds, with walking and night safaris the main reserves don't allow.

  • It's your first safari and you want the classic Mara experience
  • You value exclusive, low-vehicle private conservancies
  • You want to pair the bush with Diani Beach quickly
  • You're drawn to Mara River crossings (Jul–Oct)
Zebras grazing on the Serengeti plains, Tanzania

Choose Tanzania if…

The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater offer sheer scale and year-round migration drama, and a safari finishes perfectly on the white-sand beaches of Zanzibar.

  • You want to follow the Great Migration year-round
  • Endless wilderness and space matter most to you
  • The Ngorongoro Crater is on your bucket list
  • You dream of finishing on Zanzibar's beaches

How it works

How a combined safari fits together

Because the Mara and the Serengeti share a border and an ecosystem, a combined trip flows in one clean line, usually north to south and out to the coast. Here is the shape of a classic Kenya and Tanzania safari.

  1. 1
    Kenya

    Nairobi

Arrive and ease in, often with a night at the famous Giraffe Manor before you meet your guide.

  2. 2
    Kenya

    The Maasai Mara

Three or four nights of dense big cats and low-vehicle private conservancies on the classic plains.

  3. 3
    Kenya to Tanzania

    Across the border

A short hop south into the Serengeti. The Mara and the Serengeti are one ecosystem, so it flows naturally.

  4. 4
    Tanzania

    Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Sheer scale, year-round migration drama and a day on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater.

  5. 5
    Optional finish

    Zanzibar

Three or four nights of white sand and warm ocean to unwind at the end of the safari.

Timings are typical patterns, not guarantees. The herds follow the rains, so they shift year to year. Our specialists position you for the best chance of the action when you travel.
