Male lion in the Maasai Mara, Kenya

Choose Kenya if…

The Maasai Mara delivers the densest big-cat action in East Africa, and Kenya's private conservancies let you enjoy it away from the crowds, with walking and night safaris the main reserves don't allow.

  • It's your first safari and you want the classic Mara experience
  • You value exclusive, low-vehicle private conservancies
  • You want to pair the bush with Diani Beach quickly
  • You're drawn to Mara River crossings (Jul–Oct)
Zebras grazing on the Serengeti plains, Tanzania

Choose Tanzania if…

The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater offer sheer scale and year-round migration drama, and a safari finishes perfectly on the white-sand beaches of Zanzibar.

  • You want to follow the Great Migration year-round
  • Endless wilderness and space matter most to you
  • The Ngorongoro Crater is on your bucket list
  • You dream of finishing on Zanzibar's beaches

Kenya vs Tanzania: your questions answered

Is Kenya or Tanzania better for a first safari?

Both are excellent. Kenya's Maasai Mara is compact and reliably delivers big cats, which makes it a brilliant first safari, especially via the quieter private conservancies. Tanzania suits travellers who want sheer scale and the full Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater experience. Our specialists will match the right one to how you like to travel.

Where can I see the Great Migration?

The migration is a year-round, continuous movement across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. The dramatic Mara River crossings happen in Kenya's Maasai Mara roughly July to October, while Tanzania's Serengeti offers the calving season (Jan–Feb) and the plains for much of the rest of the year. To maximise your chances of a river crossing, we often combine both.

Can I combine Kenya and Tanzania in one trip?

Yes, and many travellers do. The two countries share the same ecosystem, and short light-aircraft flights connect the Mara and the Serengeti. Combining them gives you the best of both: classic Mara game viewing and the vast Serengeti, often finished with a few days on Zanzibar or Diani Beach.

Which is more expensive, Kenya or Tanzania?

Tanzania's park fees and premium camps often make it slightly more expensive, while Kenya can offer more flexibility on budget, though both span everything from comfortable tented camps to ultra-luxury lodges. Because we tailor every trip and have exclusive camp rates, we'll build an itinerary around your budget rather than a fixed package.

When is the best time to go?

The long dry season (roughly June to October) is prime time for both countries. Wildlife concentrates around water and the bush thins out. January to February is excellent too, with the Serengeti calving season and good weather. We'll advise on the best window for the wildlife and experiences you care about most.
