A Tanzania and Zanzibar holiday gives you the best of both worlds: the drama of the Serengeti and the crater, then the calm of the Indian Ocean. Flick through the experiences below to see what your combination trip can look like.

The safari half of your trip starts in the Serengeti, home to the greatest wildlife show on earth. More than a million wildebeest and zebra move through the ecosystem all year, from the calving on the southern plains in January and February to the heart-stopping Mara River crossings in the north between roughly July and October. We time your safari and place your camps to put you where the action is.

Yes, and it's one of our most popular trips. A short flight links the Serengeti and Arusha with Zanzibar, so you pair an action-packed northern-circuit safari with white-sand beaches, snorkelling and the history of Stone Town. It's the classic safari-and-beach holiday, and we handle all the routing, flights and timing for you.
We'd suggest around 10 to 11 days to do both halves justice: roughly 5 to 7 days on safari across the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, then 3 to 4 nights on Zanzibar to unwind. Shorter safari-and-beach trips of 7 days are possible if you have less time, and we're happy to extend either half. Tell us how long you have and we'll build the right balance.
The long dry season, roughly June to October, is prime for safari game viewing and the Mara River crossings, and Zanzibar is warm and sunny then too, so it's the classic window for the combination. January to February is excellent for the calving on the southern plains and also lovely on the coast. The main period to avoid is the long rains from late March to May, when both the parks and the island are at their wettest.
Almost always safari first, beach second. The early starts and long game drives come while you're fresh, and Zanzibar's slow mornings by the sea are the perfect way to decompress before flying home. We'll route the internal flights so the two halves flow seamlessly into one trip.
By light aircraft and a short scheduled flight. You fly out of your final safari airstrip to Arusha or Kilimanjaro, then hop across to Zanzibar in around an hour. The scenic flights over the Serengeti are part of the experience, and we arrange every internal connection and transfer for you.
It depends on the camps and how you travel. Our family and classic safari-and-beach trips start from around $5,350 per person, a classic private northern circuit with Zanzibar runs roughly $7,500 to $10,200, and a luxury safari paired with Zanzibar's best oceanfront retreats typically runs $10,900 to $14,000 and up. Every trip is tailor-made, and we hold exclusive rates at many of the best camps and lodges.
It's ideal for both. Families love the mix of wildlife and beach, with lodges and hotels that genuinely look after children, while the safari-and-beach combination is one of the world's great honeymoons. We tailor the pace, camps and rooms to who's travelling, from family suites to romantic oceanfront villas.
The dry season is prime for both the safari and the beach, while the green months bring the calving, lush scenery and better value. The one window to avoid is the long rains in April and May. Here's how the year shapes up across the two halves.
Peak window: June to October for the dry season, big-cat sightings, the Mara River crossings and sunny Zanzibar beaches. January to February for the calving and warm coast.
Roughly two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move in a continuous clockwise loop around the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem each year. Here's where the herds are, season by season.
Dec–Mar, Calving season on the southern plains (Ndutu)
Apr–May, Herds mass and move through the central Serengeti
May–Jun, Grumeti River & the Western Corridor
Jul–Aug, North to the Mara River crossings into Kenya
Aug–Oct, Grazing in the Maasai Mara
Nov, Returning south down the eastern Serengeti
Timings are typical patterns, not guarantees. The herds follow the rains, so they shift year to year. Our specialists position you for the best chance of the action when you travel.
