A different adventure every day

The Okavango Delta is one of the few places in Africa where water and land safaris sit side by side. Flick through the experiences below to see what a tailor-made day in the Delta can look like.

Mokoro safaris

The signature Delta experience. Your guide poles you silently through papyrus-lined channels in a traditional mokoro, drifting past red lechwe in the shallows while kingfishers dart overhead. It is the best way to notice the small things, from painted reed frogs to water lilies and the quiet detail of the Delta.

Pair water and land, not one or the other

A strong Okavango itinerary combines a water-focused camp with a land-focused concession. The flood level changes through the year, so camp location matters more than simply booking anywhere in the Delta.

Okavango Delta safaris: your questions answered

What is an Okavango Delta safari like?

The Okavango is a vast inland delta where the Okavango River spills into the Kalahari, creating a seasonal maze of channels, lagoons and islands. You stay in small fly-in camps and explore by 4x4, by motorboat and by mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe poled through the shallows. It's one of Africa's most exclusive, wildlife-rich and atmospheric safari experiences.

When is the best time for an Okavango Delta tour?

Counter-intuitively, the Delta floods during the dry season. Floodwaters from Angola typically arrive between May and August, which is also peak game-viewing time as wildlife concentrates around water. That window is ideal for mokoro and boat safaris. The green season (November to April) is quieter, lower-priced and excellent for birding and newborn wildlife. We'll time your trip around the experience you want.

How much does an Okavango Delta trip cost?

The Delta sits at the premium end of African safari because of its remote fly-in camps and low-density tourism model. Our Botswana itineraries that feature the Okavango start from around $8,500 per person and rise with more exclusive camps and longer stays. Every trip is tailor-made, so we shape the camps and length around your budget, and we hold exclusive rates at many of the best camps.

Should I choose a water camp or a land camp?

It depends on the season and what you want to see. Water camps offer the classic mokoro experience and shine during the flood; land camps focus on 4x4 game drives and reliable predator sightings. The best Okavango trips often combine both, plus Chobe and Victoria Falls. Our specialists will balance the mix so you get the full Delta, water and wildlife.

Can I combine the Okavango Delta with Chobe and Victoria Falls?

Yes, and most travellers do. The classic Botswana circuit links the Okavango Delta with Chobe's elephant herds and the spectacle of Victoria Falls just over the border, connected by short light-aircraft flights. We'll design the routing and timing so each stop complements the last.

How many days do you need for an Okavango Delta safari?

We'd suggest at least 3 to 4 nights in the Delta to settle into its rhythm and combine water and land activities, though many travellers stay longer. Most of our trips run 7 to 12 days in total, pairing the Okavango with Chobe and Victoria Falls. Tell us how long you have and we'll build the right balance.

How do you get to the Okavango Delta?

You fly into Maun or Kasane and then transfer to your camps by light aircraft, the only practical way to reach the Delta's remote airstrips. The scenic flights over the channels and islands are part of the experience, and we arrange every internal connection for you.

Best time for an Okavango Delta safari

Counter-intuitively, the Delta is at its best when Botswana is at its driest, as floodwaters from Angola arrive in the dry season. Here's how the year shapes up so you can time your trip around the experience you want.
