Getting up close to the game of Ol Pejeta

How does Ol Pejeta Bush Camp compare to other options in Laikipia?

Ol Pejeta Bush Camp sits in the authentic, rustic camp category rather than the luxury lodge space. If you're looking for marble bathrooms and butler service, this isn't your spot. But if you want a genuine bush experience with bucket showers, canvas tents, and that real safari feeling, it's perfect.

With such a small amount of tents, you'll get incredibly personalized service and an intimate atmosphere. What sets it apart is the conservation focus - you're staying right in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which is famous for its rhino sanctuary and being the last place on earth with northern white rhinos.

While other camps in the area might offer sleeker accommodations, Ol Pejeta Bush Camp gives you that authentic safari experience that's becoming harder to find. It's run by Asilia Africa, a B Corp company, so everything from the solar power to community engagement is thoughtfully done.

Ol Pejeta Bush Camp, Kenya

Camp in the wilderness with the service of a luxury resort

We think it's worth noting

  • The camp focuses on authentic bush experiences over luxury amenities - there's no swimming pool or spa, which might surprise those expecting resort-style indulgences.
  • Wi-Fi is only available in the communal lounge and tends to be slow, with no internet access in your tent for those who need to stay connected.
  • The rustic bucket showers and elevated tent platforms on natural terrain may not suit travelers with mobility challenges or those preferring modern bathroom facilities.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy FAQs

  • How long should I stay in Ol Pejeta?

With so many things to do in Ol Pejeta, one day is most definitely not enough. To gain the full experience of this incredible safari, it is recommended to stay for around four to five days, to complete all the activities and have time to put your feet up and relax.

  • Is Ol Pejeta child friendly?

Yes, yes and yes! There are so many activities for children within the park, such as seeing Baraka, the chimpanzees and also becoming a junior ranger! Children love exploring and learning new things, therefore definitely bring them along and let them experience the amazing wildlife.

  • Can I donate to Ol Pejeta?

You can donate to the conservancy online or at the park, within the information centres and shops.

  • Are there any rules?

Upon entry to the park you will receive a code of conduct of Ol Pejeta. It is important to follow all instructions for your own safety. The park is also eco-friendly, and its main goal is conservation therefore following guidelines of littering, eating and drinking is important.

  • Can the animals be touched?

No, the animals are in the wild and are not tamed. You are not allowed to exit the vehicles during game drives unless you are instructed to do so by the rangers.

  • Is Wi-Fi available at the camp?

Yes, there's Wi-Fi in the main communal lounge area, but don't expect blazing speeds. It's functional for checking emails or sharing a few photos, but this is very much a place to disconnect from the digital world.

Your individual tent won't have Wi-Fi, which honestly is part of the charm. You're here to listen to elephants munching outside your tent at night, not scroll through social media. The slow connection in the lounge means you can stay in touch if needed, but you'll naturally find yourself putting the phone away and focusing on the incredible surroundings.

If you absolutely need reliable internet for work, this might not be the best choice. But if you're looking for a proper digital detox with just enough connectivity for emergencies, it's perfect.

  • When's the best time to visit for wildlife viewing?

The dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer the most reliable wildlife viewing. Animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot, and the vegetation is less dense so you'll have clearer sightlines.

That said, the green season from April to May has its own magic. You'll see fewer crowds, pay lower rates, and the landscape transforms into this lush, vibrant green. It's incredible for birding and photography, with dramatic skies and beautiful light. The downside is that animals can be more spread out since water is abundant everywhere.

For rhino viewing specifically, any time of year works well since they're resident in the conservancy. The chimpanzee sanctuary and many of the conservation activities are year-round too. When you book with us, we'll talk through what you're most hoping to see and help you pick the perfect timing.

  • Are there any extra costs you should know about?

The big one is the Ol Pejeta Conservancy fee - about $90-$100 per person per day. This isn't something the camp controls, it goes directly to conservation efforts and gives you access to all the conservancy areas including the chimpanzee sanctuary.

Optional activities like lion tracking, rhino sanctuary visits, and horseback riding with rhinos range from $40-$100 per person. The Junior Ranger program for kids is $25 per child per day. Premium beverages, gratuities, and any personal purchases aren't included either.

When you book with us, we'll give you a complete breakdown of what to expect so there are no surprises. The conservancy fees and any optional activities you want can be paid directly at the camp, or we can arrange some of them in advance.

Flights to and from Nanyuki, travel insurance, and visas (if required) are separate from your camp stay.

  • Is the camp suitable for guests with mobility challenges?

Unfortunately, this isn't the best choice if you have mobility challenges. The camp's rustic, authentic setup means natural pathways, elevated canvas tents on raised platforms, and uneven terrain throughout.

There aren't paved walkways or accessibility features - you're literally in the African bush with all the natural challenges that brings. The bathroom facilities, while perfectly functional, are basic safari-style setups that might be difficult to navigate for anyone with mobility restrictions.

If accessibility is a concern, we'd be happy to recommend other options in Kenya that might work better for your needs while still giving you an incredible safari experience.

  • What makes this camp special from a conservation perspective?

This is where Ol Pejeta Bush Camp really shines. You're staying right in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which is doing some of the most important conservation work in Africa. This is the last place on earth where you can see northern white rhinos, and the conservancy is home to the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa.

The camp runs entirely on solar power and has an incredibly low environmental footprint. Asilia Africa, who runs the camp, is a certified B Corp, meaning they meet strict standards for environmental and social performance. Your stay directly funds anti-poaching efforts, community development, and wildlife research.

You'll meet local staff who've been employed through community partnerships, and many of the guides are from nearby communities. It's not just eco-tourism marketing speak - you can literally see where your money goes and the impact it's having. The optional activities like lion tracking put you right alongside researchers doing real conservation work.

  • What type of traveler does this camp suit best?

This camp is perfect for travelers who value authentic experiences over luxury amenities. If you're someone who gets excited about sleeping in a canvas tent with elephants wandering past, rather than needing marble bathrooms and room service, you'll love it here.

It's ideal for eco-conscious travelers who want their holiday to make a positive impact. The conservation focus isn't just a side note - it's central to everything the camp does. First-time safari-goers often love the authentic feel, while experienced safari travelers appreciate the intimate size and genuine bush atmosphere.

The camp works beautifully for couples, especially honeymooners who want something meaningful rather than just luxurious. Small groups of friends do well here too, and families with older children who can handle a bit of adventure will have an amazing time.

If you're someone who needs constant Wi-Fi, formal dining, or resort-style amenities, this probably isn't your place. But if you want to disconnect, learn about conservation, and have an authentic African experience, it's absolutely perfect.
