Brilliant Africa's Guide To Game Drives - Q&A Transcript

  • Samwel, where are you right now?

I'm currently at the Maweninga tented camp near Tarangire National Park. From here, you can see Lake Burungi and, behind it, Lake Manyara, known for its flamingos. We're also close to the Great Rift Valley. It's a fantastic spot for wildlife and nature.

  • What's the schedule for a typical game drive in the area?

Game drives usually start early, around 6 a.m., to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and active wildlife. The morning light is also great for spotting animals, especially cats like lions, which are more active during this time.  Game parks normally allow drives between 6 am to 6 pm.

  • Are there any specific rules to follow during the game drives?

Yes, there are a few important rules. Guests are not allowed to leave the vehicle during a game drive, except in designated areas like picnic sites. We also emphasize the importance of being quiet, patient, and respectful of the wildlife. It's about enjoying and observing nature, not rushing through the experience.

  • How do you handle situations where guests need to use the restroom during a game drive?

If it's a real emergency, we find a safe spot with fewer animals around. But generally, we try to plan bathroom breaks and use lodges or designated facilities, which might take around 15 to 30 minutes to reach.

  • Are there any risks of animals entering the vehicles during the game drives?

Animals here are accustomed to vehicles and often keep their distance. Curious animals like elephants and cheetahs might come close, but they don't usually enter the vehicles. It's important to stay quiet and calm in these situations and follow the guide's instructions.

  • What advice do you have for someone going on a game drive?

Enjoy the moment and focus on the experience rather than just taking photos. It's also a good idea to look around, as there might be interesting sightings in all directions. And always feel free to ask your guide questions; they're there to enhance your experience and share their knowledge of the local wildlife and environment.
