Why we like this camp
- You're perfectly positioned in the northern Serengeti to witness the drama of the Great Migration and those heart-stopping Mara River crossings that define an African safari.
- With just 10 luxury tented suites, you'll enjoy an intimately scaled camp where personalized service feels genuinely attentive rather than scripted.
- Your suite's floor-to-ceiling glass front opens onto private decks with panoramic Serengeti views, while natural canvas and stone materials create a sophisticated yet authentic safari atmosphere.
- The infinity pool carved into a natural cave setting offers a truly unique way to cool off between game drives, complemented by spa services and romantic lantern-lit dinners under the stars.
How does Nimali Mara compare to other camps in the northern Serengeti?
Nimali Mara sits in that sweet spot of contemporary luxury without being overly flashy. It's more intimate than some of the bigger operations - just 10 tents total - so you get a more personal experience. The camp really shines during migration season since it's positioned perfectly for river crossing action.
The contemporary design with those glass-fronted tents gives it a more modern feel compared to traditional safari camps. It's definitely a step up from the basic mobile camps, but not quite as ultra-luxurious as places like Singita.
We think it's worth noting
- The camp closes completely during April and May, so you'll need to plan your visit around these green season months when wildlife viewing is less predictable.
- Children under 5 aren't generally welcome unless you book the entire camp exclusively, and older children only receive discounts when sharing with adults.
- Wi-Fi only reaches the main lounge and reception areas, so expect limited or no internet connectivity in your suite if staying connected is important to you.

Nimali Mara FAQs
-
What kind of accommodations does Nimali Mara offer and what makes them special?
Nimali Mara has 10 tents total - 8 Luxury Tented Suites and 2 Honeymoon/Family Suites. The Luxury Tented Suites come with king-size beds, full bathrooms with both a bathtub and shower, and private decks where you'll get those incredible panoramic Serengeti views through glass front walls. Some of these also have private plunge pools and swing beds.
The Honeymoon Suites are actually two inter-leading tents that share a lounge area and come with private plunge pools. These work perfectly for families or up to four adults who want a bit more space.
-
Is Nimali Mara good for families with kids?
The camp welcomes families, but there's an age restriction - kids need to be 5 years or older. If you've got little ones under 5, the only way they can stay is if you book the entire camp exclusively, which obviously gets pretty pricey.
For families that do qualify, those Honeymoon Suites work great since they're basically two connected tents with a shared lounge. Kids 5-12 pay half the adult rate, and teens 13-17 pay 75% when sharing with parents. Under 5s stay free (when the exclusive booking rule applies).
-
What's included in your stay at Nimali Mara?
Pretty much everything you need for a proper safari experience. All your meals are covered (full board), plus standard house drinks like local wines, beers, and soft drinks. Your laundry gets taken care of, and all the scheduled game drives are included along with those magical sundowner experiences.
They'll also handle your transfers from Kogatende Airstrip, which is about 35 minutes away. One thing that's not included are the park and conservancy fees - those are separate and run about $142-154 per adult per day for park entry, plus another $59-71 per day for conservancy fees.
-
When should you visit Nimali Mara for the best experience?
June through October is absolutely the sweet spot. That's when the Great Migration is happening and you'll see those incredible river crossings everyone talks about. The weather's dry, the game viewing is at its peak, and the camp is buzzing with activity.
The camp actually closes in April and May, so that's not even an option. If you want slightly better rates and can handle some unpredictability with the migration, the shoulder seasons (June 1-20 and November through mid-February) can work well too.
-
What activities can you do at Nimali Mara?
Your stay includes morning and afternoon game drives in open-sided 4x4 vehicles, plus seasonal bush walks when conditions allow. The sundowner experiences are included and honestly one of the highlights - there's nothing like watching the sunset over the Serengeti with a drink in hand.
They also do special dining experiences like bush breakfasts and lantern-lit dinners in the wild. If you want to splurge, hot-air ballooning runs about $595 per person. You can also upgrade to a private vehicle for game drives if you don't want to share with other people, though that costs extra.
-
Is Wi-Fi available at Nimali Mara?
Yes, there's complimentary Wi-Fi available in the main lounge and reception areas. Don't expect blazing fast speeds since you're in the middle of the Serengeti, but it's reliable enough for staying in touch and sharing those amazing wildlife photos on social media.
Just keep in mind it's not available in your tent, so if you need to do any serious work or video calls, you'll want to head to the main areas.
-
How do you get to Nimali Mara?
You'll fly into Kogatende Airstrip, which has daily scheduled flights and sits about 35 minutes from camp by road. The good news is that transfer from the airstrip is included in your rate, so no extra charges there.
Most people fly in from Arusha or connect through other parts of Tanzania. The airstrip location is actually perfect since it puts you right in the heart of migration country without having to do long road transfers.
-
What's the minimum stay and how much should you budget?
They recommend at least two nights, but honestly 3-4 nights is way better if you can swing it. You need time to really settle in and maximize your game viewing opportunities, especially if you're hoping to catch river crossings.
Peak season (late June through October) runs $1,250-1,400 per person per night for the Luxury Tented Suites. Shoulder season drops to $800-950, and low season (February to May) is $550-700. Single travelers pay a 30% supplement. Remember to budget for those park and conservancy fees on top of the room rate.
-
Can the camp accommodate guests with mobility issues?
Unfortunately, Nimali Mara isn't well-suited for anyone with mobility challenges. The walkways are elevated and unpaved, and the whole camp sits on natural terrain that can be pretty uneven. Getting in and out of the game drive vehicles also requires a fair bit of agility.
If mobility is a concern, it's worth discussing specific needs directly with the camp to see if any accommodations might be possible, but honestly there are probably better options in Tanzania for travelers with accessibility requirements.
-
What's the vibe like at Nimali Mara and who fits best there?
It's definitely geared toward couples - especially honeymooners - and small groups of friends looking for something intimate and upscale. The contemporary design and smaller size create this really romantic, exclusive atmosphere.
Families with kids over 5 do well here too, especially in those interconnected Honeymoon Suites. It's not a party scene at all - more sophisticated and relaxed. If you're looking for that classic "Out of Africa" traditional safari camp feel, this might be a bit too modern for your taste.
