Mara River Post

How does Mara River Post compare to other options in the Masai Mara?

Mara River Post sits in that sweet spot between the ultra-luxury camps and more basic options in the Kogatende area. Its biggest advantage is that prime hilltop location overlooking the Mara River - you're literally front row for the migration crossings.

The infrastructure is relatively new, which means everything feels fresh and well-maintained. While it doesn't have the ultra-high-end finishes of places like Singita or Four Seasons, it offers solid luxury at an accessible price point.

We think it's worth noting

  • Wi-Fi is only available in common areas, so you'll be completely disconnected in your tent - which might be exactly what you want.
  • The property closes entirely during the main rainy season from mid-March through May.

Mara River Post FAQs

  • Where exactly is Mara River Post located?

You'll find Mara River Post perched on a hilltop in the Kogatende area of northern Serengeti National Park.

The camp overlooks the Mara River, which puts you right in the heart of the action for those incredible Great Migration river crossings. It's one of the best spots in the entire Serengeti for watching this natural spectacle unfold.

  • What types of rooms are available at Mara River Post?

The camp has 16 luxury tented accommodations spread across the property. There are 14 standard tents, each designed for two adults, plus 2 family rooms that come with two separate bedrooms - perfect if you're traveling with kids or need extra space.

All the tents sit on wooden platforms and feature private bathrooms with hot water showers, plus those amazing private verandahs where you can soak up panoramic views of either the Mara River or the endless Serengeti plains.

  • What amenities come with each tent?

Every tent has a private bathroom with all the essentials - flush toilet, basin, and a proper hot water shower. You'll also get your own veranda with comfortable seating where you can watch the world go by.

For staying connected, there are electrical outlets and up to four USB charging ports in each tent, so you can keep all your devices powered up. Just heads up though - Wi-Fi is only available in the main common areas, not inside your individual tent.

  • What dining options are available?

The lodge is designed with two main sections, each featuring its own mess areas, lounges, and dining spaces. You'll have both indoor and outdoor seating options during the day, plus a main restaurant and bar area.

All your meals are included in your stay, and you can enjoy them while taking in those stunning views. The camp doesn't specifically mention bush dinners or private dining experiences, so if those are important to you, it's worth asking when you book.

  • When is Mara River Post open?

The camp operates for most of the year but closes during Tanzania's main rainy season from mid-March through the end of May. This is pretty standard for camps in this area since the roads can become impassable during the heavy rains.

  • What's the best time to visit for wildlife?

Late June through October is absolutely the sweet spot. This is when the Great Migration herds are in the area, and you'll have the best chances of witnessing those dramatic river crossings. The weather's dry and sunny during this period, which makes for perfect game drive conditions.

The wildebeest and zebra typically start arriving in the Kogatende area around July, and the action can continue well into October depending on the rains.

  • How do you get to Mara River Post?

You'll fly into Kogatende Airstrip (KOG), which is the closest landing strip to the camp. From there, it's usually a short but exciting game drive to reach the lodge - and when we say game drive, we mean you'll likely start spotting wildlife before you even reach your tent.

If you're booking with us, all transfers from the airstrip are included and arranged as part of your package, so you don't need to worry about any of the logistics.

  • What's included in your stay?

Your rate covers all meals, drinks, and game drives - it's a proper all-inclusive experience. The transfers from Kogatende Airstrip are also included when you book through a tour operator.

The main extras you'll need to budget for are Tanzania's park fees and conservation fees, which are charged separately. Optional activities like hot air balloon rides will also be additional.

  • Is Mara River Post suitable for families?

Yes, they welcome families and have those 2 special family rooms with two separate bedrooms each. However, the camp doesn't publish specific policies about minimum ages or child rates, so it's worth checking the details when you book.

Given that it's a tented camp on wooden platforms situated on a hilltop, parents should consider whether the setup works for their particular kids' ages and mobility.

  • How many guests does the camp accommodate?

With 16 tents total, the camp can host a maximum of about 32 guests when fully booked. This relatively intimate size means you'll get personalized service and won't feel like you're part of a crowd during game drives or at dinner.

  • Are there any accessibility considerations?

The camp consists of tented accommodations on wooden platforms located on a hilltop, which could present challenges for guests with mobility issues. Since specific accessibility features aren't detailed, it's definitely worth discussing any particular needs directly with the camp before booking to see what accommodations might be possible.
