Why We Like This Hotel

  • We love the exclusive access to the private 15,000-acre Selenkay Conservancy, where you'll enjoy incredible wildlife viewing without the crowds that pack Amboseli National Park - it's like having your own private safari playground.
  • The camp's intimate scale accommodating just 20 guests creates a wonderfully personalized atmosphere, with highly experienced guides and Maasai spotters providing expert knowledge and individual attention that consistently earns rave reviews.
  • Your fully inclusive experience covers everything from meals and drinks to daily game drives, night safaris, guided bush walks with Maasai warriors, and village visits - exceptional value that lets you focus entirely on the adventure.
  • The unique night game drives and guided walking safaris offer thrilling wildlife encounters you simply can't get in most neighboring parks, adding an extra dimension to your safari experience.

We Think It's Worth Noting

  • This is classic safari camping with a rustic charm - there's no swimming pool or spa facilities, so it's not the place if you're expecting resort-style luxury amenities.
  • Children under 8 aren't accepted and walking safaris require a minimum age of 12, which limits options for families traveling with younger kids.
  • The camp closes completely from mid-April through the end of May during low season, so you'll need to plan your visit around these dates.
  • While Wi-Fi is available in communal areas, connectivity in your tent can be spotty - perfect for a digital detox, but worth knowing if staying connected is important to you.

Porini Amboseli Camp

  • What types of rooms are available at Porini Amboseli Camp?

You'll find two main types of accommodation here. There are 8 Guest Tents that work perfectly for couples or small families, with one double bed and one single bed (so they can fit 2-3 adults or 1-2 kids). Then there are 2 Family Units designed for larger groups of up to 6 people.

The Family Units are pretty clever - they've got two separate bedrooms connected by a central lounge area, with both king and single beds spread across the space.

All the tents are traditional canvas with solar lighting, private bathrooms, and those classic bucket showers where hot water's available whenever you need it. Each tent has its own veranda where you can sit and watch the conservancy come to life.

  • How exclusive is Porini Amboseli Camp?

With just 10 tents total (including those 2 family units), the camp maxes out at around 20 guests at any time. This means you'll get a really personalized experience without crowds.

The camp sits in the private Selenkay Conservancy, so you're not dealing with the tour bus crowds you'd find in the main national park areas. It's got that authentic, rustic safari feel rather than a luxury resort vibe - think classic safari charm with canvas tents and solar power, not marble bathrooms and spas.

  • What's included when you book with us?

Everything's taken care of when you book through us. Your package covers the shared road transfer from Nairobi (about 5 hours), all your meals, and drinks including soft drinks, beer, house wine, and gin & tonics.

You'll get daily game drives in open-sided 4x4 vehicles with qualified guides, plus night drives which are pretty special since you're in a private conservancy.

Guided walks with Maasai warriors, sundowners at scenic spots, and a Maasai village visit are all included too. The conservancy fees and one day of Amboseli National Park entrance are covered, plus the camp contributes to conservation efforts on your behalf.

  • How do you get there from Nairobi?

The standard option is the shared road transfer that's included in your package - it takes about 5 hours from Nairobi and gives you a nice chance to see the countryside.

If you prefer to fly, there's a private airstrip right next to the camp. You'd fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, and we can arrange private charter flights (that's an extra cost, but it cuts the travel time down significantly). The airstrip location means you're basically at camp as soon as you land.

  • What wildlife can you expect to see?

The elephant herds here are incredible - Amboseli is famous for them, and you'll often see large groups with babies. You've also got a great chance of spotting the big cats: lions, cheetahs, and if you're lucky, leopards.

The conservancy and national park are home to giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and loads of plains game. The bird watching is excellent too.

Since you'll be doing game drives in both the exclusive Selenkay Conservancy and Amboseli National Park, you get the best of both worlds - exclusive wildlife encounters and access to Amboseli's famous elephant populations against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro.

  • Is Wi-Fi available at the camp?

Yes, there's Wi-Fi in the main lounge and dining area, so you can stay connected when you need to. Since this is a solar-powered camp in a conservancy setting, don't expect lightning-fast speeds, but it's perfectly adequate for checking emails or sharing photos.

  • Is the camp suitable for families with children?

Kids aged 8 and up are welcome, and there are reduced rates for children between 8-16. The Family Units work really well for families since you get that separate bedroom setup.

Just keep in mind that the minimum age for walking safaris is 12 years. The camp has that authentic bush setting with sandy ground and canvas tents, so it's more about the adventure than luxury resort-style amenities. Most kids who love animals and adventure absolutely love the experience.

  • Can guests with mobility issues stay at the camp?

The camp's natural bush setting with sandy ground and canvas tent accommodation makes it challenging for anyone with significant mobility issues. Since it's focused on that authentic safari experience rather than accessibility accommodations, it's really not well-suited for guests who need extensive accessibility features.

If you're traveling with someone who has mobility concerns, it's worth discussing the specifics with us when booking so we can give you a realistic picture of what to expect.

Activities

For the adventure seekers, they offer day and night game drives through the private 15,000-acre conservancy and Amboseli National Park, guided bush walks with experienced Maasai warriors, and cultural visits to local Maasai villages.

For those seeking a more relaxed pace, you can enjoy sundowners at scenic viewpoints overlooking the conservancy, bush breakfasts in beautiful locations, and peaceful moments on your private furnished veranda.

The camp's location in the exclusive Selenkay Conservancy ensures an intimate safari experience with exceptional wildlife viewing away from the crowds.
